South African star Aiden Markram pulled off an exceptional dive to ward off Australian hitter Steve Smith in his team’s T20 World Cup opener.
In a low scoring clash, Smith had made a 35 compound and looked set to lead Australia to victory.
However, Markram had other ideas, giving South Africa a chance for a remarkable victory with a superb hold from the deep.
Attempting to hit Anrich Nortje offside for four, Smith shot the ball a little too straight and Markram produced an excellent diving strike.
In comment, former New Zealand bowler Danny Morrison remained in disbelief, exclaiming, âYou’re kidding!
“I thought it was a four, but Markram has a cape here. It’s a take and a half.”
Her partner in comment added: “What a take, this is an incredible take!
âSteve Smith is looking to repeat the shot he played on the previous delivery, but this time he punched it in the air and looks at Markram – what a take. Unbelievable!â
Reacting to the social media capture one fan wrote: Getting better every time you watch this capture. Unbelievable.”
“Great catch, Aiden Markram, your beauty!” writes another.
âNow that’s an absolutely flying take on Aiden Markram,â added a third. “Brilliant piece of fielding !!”
Earlier in the game, Markram had been South Africa’s only bright light with the bat, scoring 40 as they put in a below-par score of 118-9.
Despite their poor batting performance, South Africa was excellent on the pitch, approaching a surprise victory.
Nortje fired Australia captain Aaron Finch early for a duck and South Africa continued to pick up regular wickets to keep themselves in the game.
However, Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade made it across the finish line with Australia winning the match by five wickets.
