Avon diver Sarah Grady finishes second in Class M competition – The Collinsville Press

MIDDLETOWN, March 10, 2022 – Three divers who helped the Avon High boys’ swim and dive team win the CCC North Championship on Saturday dove well in the diving portion of the Class M Championships on Thursday night at the Wesleyan University.

Junior Sarah Grady of Avon finished second in class M diving with a score of 389.20. Only Wilton’s second student, Griffin Casey, was better with a score of 464.00.

Junior Gabrielle Fisher finished tenth with a score of 306.80 while her sophomore teammate Lauren Frey finished 17th with a score of 234.65. Grady won the dive in the CCC North Championship encounter with Fisher taking third and Frey finishing fifth, picking up crucial points for the Falcons, who beat EO Smith/Tolland by just 13 points.

Grady’s silver medal is the highest result for an Avon daughter competing in a CIAC Men’s Championship competition. The previous best result was a sixth-place finish by Jillian Strassner in 2006 in the 100-yard backstroke.

It is also the best performance by an Avon diver since Jon Feldman, who won an S-class title in 2007 and placed third in the M-class in 2008.

Since Avon does not field a team in the fall when women’s swimming is run by the CIAC, girls are welcome to swim on the men’s team during the winter season, but must meet the qualifying standards of male swimming for swimming in state championship competitions.

Trials for the Class M competition swimming events will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cornerstone Pool in West Hartford. The Class M competition finals will be held Wednesday, March 16, beginning at 6 p.m., also at Cornestone, which was Avon’s home pool this season.

This is the first time since 2019 that the CIAC has held men’s swimming championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
