Boys swimming and diving: Seniors shine as Detroit Lakes take part in Mid-State Championships – Detroit Lakes Tribune
DETROIT LAKES — It was a big day for both Laker seniors at the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center on Saturday in the Mid-State Conference Championships.
John Gulon took first place in three separate events, including the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.70 seconds. He also won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.77 seconds before launching the Detroit Lakes’ first 400-yard stint with Ryan Erickson, Zane Roberts and Micah Barberg. The same team took second place in the 200-yard medley relay.
Luther Van Offelen was just behind Gulon in fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.26. He also finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:17.31) and swam in two relays. The team of Erickson, Zariah Wouters, Brian Morrison and Van Offelen took third place in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:57.53), while the team of Carson Jensen, Wouters, Van Offelen and Morrison took finished fifth in the 200-yard medley relay (2:26.04).
Erickson took first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.68. Barberg was behind him in third place at 56.86. Roberts scored a podium in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:29.87. Lane Yliniemi led the Detroit Lakes Fivers to third place with a score of 257.85. Morrison finished fourth with a score of 250.2.
