Cheboygan Diver finds a 95-year-old message in a bottle and contacts the daughter of the man who wrote it.

During a late evening dive Friday, Nautical North Family Adventures owner Captain Jennifer Dowker discovered a 95-year-old artifact.

“I spotted this green bottle on top of a bed of fish, so I said ‘oh that looks cool’ so I leaned over and grabbed it and noticed it ‘there was paper in it,’ Dowker said. “So immediately I was like ‘okay, this is awesome’.”

The note inside read: “Will the person who finds this bottle give this paper to George Morrow, Cheboygan Michigan.” It was dated 1926.

After the note was shared on Facebook, it quickly gained a lot of attention. And finally, Dowker was able to get in touch with George’s daughter, Michèle Primeau.

“It was a total shock, but knowing my dad he always did little things like when we were building our basement, he put up the panels and he put a note behind that,” said Primeau. “I know the date on the bottle was November 26 and her birthday was November. It wouldn’t surprise me if he did this on his birthday.

As she plans to come and take a look at the note for herself in September, Primeau says she would rather Dowker keep it.

“I was really hoping to get him back and I was going to frame him and everything,” Primeau said. “Then when I went to bed last night I started to think about it, and it will keep my dad alive if I give it to Jen.”

Dowker says the bottle probably isn’t the only interesting artifact deep in the Cheboygan County Marina.
