Destin divers highlight sport’s growth with Women’s Diving Day

DESTIN, Fla. (WKRG) – Like-minded female scuba divers in Destin joined forces Saturday for the 2022 annual PADI Women’s Dive Day. The group of 19, including dive masters and instructors all female, visited the wreckage of the Destin Bridge 1 mile off the coast on July 16th.

The women were of varying ages and skill levels, ranging from beginner to lifelong diver. Scheuermann said it was Emerald Coast Scuba’s first all-female dive for the celebrated day.

“My goal was basically to get a bunch of cool ladies out on the water and have a good socialized time on top and have a good dive underwater and we did that and more,” said Scheuermann. “I think everyone has made many new relationships that will hopefully last a very long time. Everyone met new dive buddies and it was good to be the majority instead of the minority for a change so that was cool.

Scheuermann has been diving the coast for over 10 years and has seen a big gender shift over the years in the shop.

“Most of the time I was the only woman on a boat I was on and now that ratio over the last 10 years the ratios have balanced out at almost 50/50,” Scheuermann said. . “At this point, whenever I’m on a boat, I’m with at least a few other women.”

PADI Worldwide 2021 statistics showed a steady pace of male and female certifications. A greater change was observed in the age groups that obtain certification.

“So yeah, it’s really cool to see the influx of women into the dive industry and that we see it exactly in our area,” Scheuermann said.

Evelin Potter, 14, has just been certified with Emerald Coast Scuba and participated in the first Women’s Dive Day.

“That was great,” Potter said. Mostly because there were lots of friends there and the waves weren’t as choppy as the first time I dived in the ocean.”

Potter shared his favorite thing about scuba diving with WKRG News 5. “Especially just being able to see everything God created and like all fish and I really like starfish it was really cute. too,” Potter said.

Emerald Coast Scuba offers year-round scuba diving courses and certifications. For those who have never tried it, a discovery dive will test whether the sport is right for you.

PADI operates in over 186 countries and territories worldwide with over 6,600 dive centers.
