PHUKET: A local diver drowned while underwater fishing on Layi Beach in Kamala yesterday (October 29).

Kamala Police Lt. Col. Suchart Meelampong was briefed on the incident at Layi Beach at an undisclosed time yesterday (October 29). The report mentioned a man who drowned while enjoying a spearfishing at Layi Beach.

After an hour of searching, the body of the diver – Karun Somsa, 59 – was found stranded on the shore and taken to Patong Hospital to determine the exact cause of death.

Kriengsak Boonlang, lifeguard at the administrative organization of the Kamala sub-district (OuBorTor), explained that the report initially concerned a missing person.

Upon arriving at the scene, Mr. Kriengsak found Mr. Karun’s wife sitting on the beach exactly where her husband went in the water the last time. The woman said her partner loved spearfishing and had caught a squid earlier that day. Mr. Karun then went to get more catch but did not return. After spending an hour waiting, the woman sounded the alarm.

When Mr. Kriengsak arrived on the beach, the search for the missing man was already underway. Half an hour later, local rescuer Chakturong Chaipong found a buoy, presumably indicating where the missing man was hunting, as well as a harpoon gun. Yet Mr. Karun was nowhere.

Mr. Chakturong continued to search on his jet ski until he received a report from local villagers, who were assisting in the search, that the body was discovered stranded by the waves. Mr. Karun had his wetsuit, mask and fins with him – but no other equipment.

Based on his lifeguard experience, Mr. Chakturong presumed that after encountering problems, Mr. Karun got rid of his equipment, tied the buoy and tried to swim to shore, but failed. .

It remains to be seen what went so tragically wrong with Mr. Karun’s spearfishing.
