Diving at Homestead Crater Geothermal Hot Spring in Midway, Utah

The Homestead Resort, where the hot springs are located, states that the hot springs formed over 10,000 years ago when snow from the nearby Wasatch Mountains seeped into the earth. The water warmed up and rose to the surface where it deposited minerals that formed a volcano-like dome.

I chose to dive, which is $90 for spring entry, scuba gear, and my dive buddy. Homestead Crater requires divers to have a buddy. As I was traveling solo, I paid extra to have one of the site guides dive with me. If I had just snorkeled it would have cost me $18.

When I arrived one morning in May, I first thought the beehive-shaped crater was unassuming. It’s housed in a limestone dome covered in dirt and grass and wasn’t as big as I imagined.

The water glinted beneath the sunlight, which beamed through a small opening at the top of the dome. Since Dave and I were the first to the springs, the only noise was the water flowing and echoing throughout the space. The light, sound and smell created a peaceful environment, I thought.

We got ready for our dive. I usually take a wetsuit to stay warm when diving, but Dave reassured me that a wetsuit wasn’t necessary thanks to the warm waters of the springs.

I put on my scuba gear and jumped in. As the warm water enveloped my body, we sank and swam in circles around the limestone walls.
