FG targets underwater resources with technology
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired), said on Friday that Nigeria would exploit the strategic mineral resources littering its seabed using technology.
According to a statement signed by his special adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari spoke when he welcomed the secretary general of the International Seabed Authority, Mr. Michael Lodge, at the State House, in Abuja.
Lodge, who traveled to Buhari on Friday evening, was attending a workshop on Africa’s underwater resources in Abuja.
The statement is titled “Using technology, we will exploit our underwater resources, says President Buhari”.
He said that given the vast underwater resources at Nigeria’s disposal, deploying the technology and funding studies would be helpful.
Buhari also applauded the Nigerian Navy for its role in protecting the country’s maritime domain, urging it to “continue to guard us jealously”.
On his part, Lodge thanked Nigeria for hosting the international workshop and commended the country for the leadership it is providing in Africa.
He encouraged the country to explore its underwater resources “to support the blue economy” and pledged to stand in solidarity with Nigeria during his tenure as secretary-general.
