Girls swimming and diving: Skarie and Avant appointed new Perham-New York Mills coaches ahead of 2022 season – Perham Focus
Perham’s Activities Department has announced the hiring of two new swimming and diving coaches for the 2022 sports season.
Pending School Board approval for Independent School District 549, Perham Director of Activities Erin Anderson has named Courtney Skarie head coach and Mike Avant as assistant coach following the resignation of head coach Jenson Grimley. Trent Swanson will remain as a volunteer assistant coach.
Anderson said Grimley had been a wonderful advocate for boys and girls swimming during his time in the school district.
“She was dedicated, invested and very generous for the good of the students and the programs,” said Anderson. “I am so grateful for her leadership during her years coaching the Yellowjackets and for all the ways she showed the students that she appreciated them. She will be missed.
Skarie takes charge of the Yellowjackets, but is no stranger to the Perham swimming program. She has been leading the Lake District Penguin Swimmers since October 2020 and is the Marketing and Watersports Manager for the Perham Area Community Centre. She was also a swimming coach for the Monticello Swim Club in 2017-2018.
“I’m thrilled the Yellowjacket swimmers are welcoming Coach Skarie and for what she will bring to the table given her background and experience as a competitive swimmer and coach,” Anderson said. “His enthusiasm and energy are evident, and he is someone who seems very determined to inspire his student-athletes to succeed. I am thrilled to partner with her as she takes the reins as our next head coach.
Avant joins the program with a strong background in swimming as well. He coached the Northfield Bullsharks at Macalester College and a camp at St. Olaf College, as well as extensive work as a coach and fitness instructor.
“Avant is going to bring a very wide range of gifts to our swimming programs. Like Coach Skarie, he has competitive swimming and coaching experience and is also a professional coach, so he has a wealth of knowledge to coach our athletes. said Anderson. “Mike is highly motivated and invested in the sport of swimming, but has a deep understanding of what a great high school swimming experience can and should be for our students. Coach Avant is a great addition to our coaching staff.
Skarie and Avant were introduced to the team on August 15, the first official day of swim training for the 2022 season.
