HK Co-op Gymnastics takes two more wins; Girls hoops beat Old Saybrook

The HK/Morgan/Westbrook (HK/M/W) cooperative women’s gymnastics team took on Valley Regional and Old Lyme in a tri-meet at ABC Gymnastics on January 28. The Cougars posted a record score of 138.95. points for beating Valley Regional (131.3) and Old Lyme (110.3) in the encounter.
HK junior Juliana Gagliardi finished tied in the all-around recording a score of 37.1 for the Cougars. Gagliardi took first place on vault (9.25), first on beam (9.3), was tied for first on floor (9.55) and placed second on bars (9. 0) to finish tied for first in the all-around.
Morgan junior Megan Cafferty took second place in the all-around with a score of 34.65. Cafferty finished second on floor (9.4) and fourth on vault (8.75) to highlight her performance. Westbrook sophomore Hannah Freund was third on floor (9.05) and HK sophomore Rebecca Rosenblum-Jones was fourth on beam (8.4) to help their team sweep the competition .
The Haddam-Killingworth women’s basketball team split a pair of games last week to put their record at 4-8 this season. The Cougars lost to Portland before defeating Old Saybrook in recent action.
On January 25, HK lost to Portland 44-34 in a road game. The Cougars took a 17-6 lead over Portland in the first quarter. However, the Highlanders beat HK in the second (10-6), third (14-5) and fourth (14-6) quarters to claim the victory.
Junior Kaleigh Bodak scored 11 points for the Cougars. Junior Julia Favalora and rookie Ava Ramino both scored 6 points in the contest, while rookie Ella Commerford had 5 points.
Three days later, the Cougars were back on the road to take on Old Saybrook and took a 45-38 win over the Rams. HK trailed 12-8 after the first quarter, but then beat the Rams 13-0 in the second quarter to take a 21-12 halftime lead, then held off Old Saybrook in the second half to emerge victorious.
Bodak had a huge game scoring 30 points to go with 10 rebounds for the Cougars. Ramino scored 5 points, junior Audra Yazmer had 4 points with 4 assists and 2 blocks, and Favalora scored 4 points in the win.
The Hong Kong men’s basketball team suffered two defeats last week to improve to 0-12 on the year.
On January 25, HK lost to Portland 44-34. Three days later, the Cougars faced Old Saybrook on the road and suffered a 52-43 loss to the Rams.
The Haddam-Killingworth wrestling team hit the road to take on Ellis Tech on January 26. The Cougars earned a convincing victory over Ellis Tech by beating the Eagles by the final score of 67-6 in the encounter.
boys ice hockey
The Rocky Hill/Middletown/Plainvillle/HK Co-op boys hockey team hit the ice for a game against Wethersfield on January 26th. The Cougars suffered a 4-1 loss to Wethersfield at Newington Ice Arena to improve to 5-6 on the season.
Swimming and diving boys
The HK/Morgan/Valley (HK/M/V) Cooperative Men’s Swimming and Diving Team hosted two meets last week. The Cougars suffered losses to Cheshire and Notre Dame-West Haven in both meetings at HK High School.
On January 24, HK/M/V lost to Cheshire 78-64. Senior Connor Levy won the 100 butterfly (1:00.16) for the Cougars. Junior Jackson Ferguson finished first in the 200 IM (2:03.19), while junior Alejandro Campo de la Vera won the 50 freestyle (24.91).
Three days later, the Cougars suffered a 95-72 loss to Notre Dame-West Haven. Levy finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:01.33) and 100 freestyle (54.00), while Ferguson took honors in the 100 butterfly (58.69) and 100 backstroke (1: 01.97). Camp de la Vera finished first in the 100m breaststroke (24.91).
