IU Coaches Ray Looze and Drew Johansen Appointed to United States Olympic Swimming Coaching Staff
USA Swimming has announced that IU Swimming Head Coach Ray Looze and Diving Head Coach Drew Johansen will join Team USA’s coaching staff for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Looze will serve as assistant swimming coach, while Johansen will be the head coach of the US Olympic diving team.
Looze recently completed his 18th season with the Hoosiers, 16 of whom have been the head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming programs. Johansen spent eight seasons at IU as head diving coach after joining the program in 2013.
Looze was the assistant coach of the Women’s Olympic Team at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. He also coached the 2015 World University Games, 2014 FINA SC World Championships, 2011 Pool Duel and 2009 World University Games.
This is the third consecutive time that Johansen has been the head coach of the Olympic diving team. Between the London 2012 Olympics and the Rio 2016 Olympics, the United States won one gold, three silver and three bronze in diving.
IU will be sending eleven current and former college athletes to the Olympics for the second time in a row, five of whom qualified in the eight-day Olympic trials from June 13 to 20. Lilly King, her training partner Annie Lazor, Zach Apple, Blake Pieroni and Michael Brinegar each placed second or higher in their events to earn a spot on the Team USA roster. Three of the five qualified in the diving events and were led by Johansen.
The 2020 Olympic Games will take place in Tokyo, Japan, and begin on July 23.
