Florida State ended FGCU’s 10-game winning streak with a 10-4 win Tuesday night. Freshman James Tibbs hit the first Grand Slam of his career alongside homers from Logan Lacey and Jaime Ferrer to solidify the victory.
The Seminoles rose in three major polls after the Cal Series, peaking at No. 8 in D1Baseball (of 10) and No. 10 in Baseball America (of 12). The first RPI ranking was also announced on Monday, with FSU at No. 10.
Wake Forest opened its season 11-0 before falling to Coastal Carolina on Tuesday. The Demon Deacons have scored 151 runs this year and rank second in the nation in batting average and on-base percentage.
FSU’s three starting pitchers set a new season record for innings pitched last weekend, with Bryce Hubbart and Ross Dunn also setting career highs. It was the second longest outing of Parker Messick’s career.
Messick, of Plant City, Fla., struck out nine batters against Cal, including the last five batters he faced to give the Noles a knockout victory.
The reigning NCBWA pitcher of the month for February, Hubbart had 12 strikeouts against Cal, just one shy of his career-high strikeouts set opening weekend against James Madison.
In his third start this season, Dunn struck out 11 of 22 batters faced for a new career high. He also allowed just one hit and three walks against the Golden Bears.
FSU’s offense in sixth against FGCU was the highlight of the week, as six runs in one inning was the most in a frame for the Noles this year. Three team home runs were also a season high.
The streaks continue for the Seminoles as Brett Roberts has the team’s longest hitting streak with eight including a hit in 11 of 12 games this season. Alex Toral and Tibbs have both hit base in every game this season.
Florida State last won a series at Wake Forest in 2014 and hasn’t faced the Demon Deacons on the road since 2018. FSU’s last series win against Wake Forest was in 2019 in Tallahassee.
