Underwater search teams stationed at the site of the fatal accident

Police attended the scene of a motorcycle collision this morning believed to be linked to the death of a man in Runcorn last night.

Cheshire Police reported that a seriously injured man was taken to Halton Hospital at 7 p.m. yesterday and has died.

Vehicles and crew from the North West Ambulance Service and the North West Air Ambulance also attended the hospital.

A force spokesperson said the death followed a collision involving a motorcycle in the Wigg Island Nature Reserve.

This morning when ECHO visited the park, located between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, a Police Underwater Search Team wagon was parked on an access road along the main part of the island and to where the Mersey Gateway crosses over it.

Several officers in standard officer’s uniform boarded the car and it left around 10 a.m.

Two patrol cars were exiting the access road when ECHO arrived at 9.40 a.m.

An automatic license plate recognition car and an unmarked utility vehicle were also present on the access road near a section of undergrowth and trees that had been taped to the canal side of the road.

There was no obvious presence of collision debris or disturbed foliage.

The road is approximately 1.25 km in length and connects the main access to the park to a hazardous landfill and the entrance to a rugged track that heads towards Moore.

No further details of the incident have been released at the time of writing, although police last night urged all witnesses to contact Cheshire Police on 101, citing IML incident reference 1054649. “.

In a statement this morning, a force spokesperson said: “At 7 p.m. on Thursday August 5, police received a report that a man had been brought to Halton General Hospital, on Hospital Way in Runcorn, with serious injuries and sadly passed away.

“Investigations are underway to establish the circumstances, but at this point officers believe he had been involved in a collision shortly before.

“The collision involved a motorcycle and occurred on Wigg Island in Runcorn.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting IML 1054649.”
