Rescuers are looking for two men who went missing while swimming in the Gouritz and Doringbaai River on Saturday.

A search is underway for a 40-year-old man from Mossel Bay who disappeared underwater while swimming on Saturday afternoon.

Andre Fraser, NSRI station commander Mossel Bay, said a duty party was activated at 5.32pm following reports of a drowning in progress on the Gouritz River.

He said:

The Rescue 15 Bravo sea lifeboat was towed to the scene to be launched and SA Police Services, Mossel Bay Fire and Rescue Services, Western Cape Government EMS ambulance and the EMS rescue team responded.

On arrival, 10 km along the Gouritz river from the N2, a search was launched for the man.

“Two bystanders had entered the water to try to help. One of the bystanders was treated by paramedics for non-fatal drowning symptoms suffered during efforts to try to locate the man underwater “Fraser said.

“Despite an extensive search, including our sea lifeboat which was launched, and a search along the banks of the river, there is no sign of the missing man.”

A police diving unit was continuing the search, and the man’s wife and their four-year-old child were in the custody of officers.

Jumped ‘off a pier’

Meanwhile, on the west coast, NSRI station manager Lamberts Bay, Matthys Koch, said a crew responded following police reports of a 37-year-old man missing in the harbor of Doringbay.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the man clinging to the anchor chain and appearing to be resting before disappearing underwater.

He said:

Upon arriving at the scene, our sea lifeboat…was launched to help police search for the Loeriefontein man who had disappeared underwater after apparently jumping off a jetty into the water.

After a thorough search, there was still no sign of the man.

“A police dive unit has been alerted and will continue their ongoing search,” Koch said.
