Women Divers Hall of Fame wins platinum

DEMA Diving Community Champion Awards: Women Divers Hall of Fame Wins Platinum

DEMA is fast approaching, and after last year’s rather low-key edition due to the pandemic, the show is once again welcoming many of its regular exhibitors and hosting its key events. Highlights include the Diving Community Champion Awards, which recognize “DEMA member companies who use their recreational diving activities and positions in the community to make a difference locally or on a larger scale.” Platinum, Gold and Silver awards are given to the top three DEMA member companies, as voted on by DEMA members.

The organizers have now announced the 2022 Community Diving Champions. The Platinum Award is given to Women Diver Hall of Fame (WDHOF) in recognition of the organization’s efforts to promote diving opportunities through its training grants and scholarships. So far this year, WDHOF has awarded $70,000 to nearly 50 people, the vast majority of whom are women. The gold price goes to The Center for Ocean Awareness, Research and Education (COARE) for its work in developing a global plastics treaty, while the Silver Award goes to the Dive Pirates Foundationwhich worked with six dive centers to provide diving systems and training for seven people with disabilities.

PRESS RELEASE

DEMA Announces 2022 Diving Community Champions Award Recipients

**The Diving Community Champions Awards will be presented at the DEMA Members Meeting to be held at the DEMA Show 2022**

The annual DEMA Diving Community Champion Award recognizes DEMA member companies who use their recreational diving activities and positions in the community to make a difference locally or on a larger scale. The Platinum, Gold and Silver Diving Community Champion Awards are given to the top three DEMA member companies, as voted by DEMA members. DEMA is thrilled and proud to announce the 2022 Dive Community Champions!

Congratulations to the 2022 Diving Community Champion Award recipients:

2022 Platinum Winner: Female Diver Hall of Fame

Part of the mission of the Women Divers Hall of Fame is to support the underwater world and its associated careers by promoting diving opportunities through grants, scholarships, internships and mentorship as well as a global network of industry contacts. In 2022, 46 scholarships and training grants were awarded for an amount of $69,750 to people who are passionate about our planet water.

2022 Gold Winner: The Center for Ocean Awareness, Research and Education (COARE)

As an internationally recognized organization for ocean conservation, COARE remains deeply connected to the diving community. It informs and educates divers about plastic pollution through the Green Divers for Blue Oceans initiative. Over the past year, COARE has focused primarily on developing a global plastics treaty that will protect human, animal and environmental health. He collaborated with a consortium representing all stakeholders in the United Nations Environment Assembly.

2022 Silver Winner: Dive Pirates Foundation

The Dive Pirates Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that shares adaptive diving with people with physical disabilities. The Dive Pirates Foundation’s 2022 “Unleash Your Inner Pirate” effort has networked six dive centers in four states to provide a life-changing experience for seven people with disabilities, including five military veterans. The foundation provided complete dive systems and training for adaptive recipients as well as their adaptive dive buddy. The experience ended with a diving trip to Key Largo. For some of these beneficiaries, this was their first boating trip with their disability.

DEMA’s goals in creating this program include recognizing DEMA member companies who give back to their communities and society through recreational diving and publicizing these community efforts to the general public. DEMA members could view the nominees and vote on DEMA.org.

The Diving Community Champion Awards will be presented during the DEMA Membership Update and Annual Meeting maintained at DEMA Fair 2022 on November 2, 2022.
